Bernice E. Ostlund, age 98, of Menomonie, died Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at Colfax Nursing and Rehabilitation.
She was born November 29, 1918 in the town of Arthur, Chippewa County, the daughter of Viola (Leipitz) and Frank Popp.
When Bernice was 18, she went to work at the Elgin Watch Co. in Elgin for a year before moving back to the area.
On May 20, 1939, she married Chester Ashley in Waukon, Iowa. Together, they had five children.
She married Orval Ostlund in 1970, and they resided in Chippewa Falls. Orval passed away on October 25, 1994.
Bernice enjoyed making hook rugs, crafts of all kinds, sewing, canning and gardening. She was a very generous person, lovingly referred to as "Grandma Bags" because she would bring her family care packages when she would visit. She was also a great cook, and loved making meals for family gatherings.
She is survived by two daughters, Karen (Frank) Sand of Menomonie, Jeanne (Nick Pund) Ashley of The Villages, FL; a son, Kenneth (Sharon) Ashley of Lake Hallie; a daughter-in-law, Marianne Ashley of Phillips, WI; a sister, Madeline Schultz of St. Francis; sister-in-law, Gail Popp of Cornell; ten grandchildren, Steven, Terry (Kari), Mark, Brad (Brenda) Sand, all of Menomonie, Barry (Debbie) Ashley of Eau Claire, Ryan (Toni) Ashley of Auburn, AL, Kimberly (John) Dunbar of Wausau, Nikki Schiefelbein of Los Angeles, CA, April (Kevin) Quevillon of Mosinee, and Amber (Thomas) Halada of LaCrosse; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Orval; son, Roger Ashley; daughter in infancy, Sharon Kay Ashley; three brothers, David, Dan and Francis Popp; and two sisters, Fritzi Sarauer and Lorraine Sarauer.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 22 at Pederson-Volker Funeral Chapel, Chippewa Falls. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, town of Arthur, Chippewa County.
Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service Saturday at the funeral chapel.
Memorials may be designated to the Chippewa Valley Chapter of the Disabled American Veterans.
