Dr. Sang Bock Lee, MD, passed away at home with family at his bedside on Thursday, October 1, 2015. He fought a courageous battle with dementia for four years after first suffering a stroke in 2002.
He was born in Tajung, South Korea, the son of Suk Muck Lee and Yun Choi Lee on May 13th, 1936. He graduated from Chonnam University School of Medicine and served as a surgeon in the Korean army. In 1966, he married Moon Sook Choi. They moved to the United States after being recruited by the US government and the Cleveland Clinic due to a shortage of physicians at that time. They lived in Cleveland and in Akron, Ohio, before moving to Wisconsin in 1973.
Dr. Lee first practiced Obstetrics and Gynecology in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, before moving to Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, to become the first Obstetrician at St. Joseph's Hospital. He and his family were warmly welcomed by Sister Frances Elizabeth Schmitz, the Sisters of St. Francis, the medical community, and the city of Chippewa Falls. Dr. Lee retired in 1994, and moved to Las Vegas, leaving behind many friends and former patients. His dedication for over 20 years to the medical community and to his many patients will not be forgotten.
Dr. Lee was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, presumed deceased in North Korea, two sisters, and his first wife, Moon Sook, in 1983.
He is survived by his wife, Marsha Picotte Lee, whom he married in 1986; as well as his daughter, Dr. Susan Lee Chan (her husband, Dr. Jeff Chan and children, Connor and Keira); his daughter, Dr. Jenny Lee Kim (her husband, Dr. Paul Kim and children, Melanie, Joel and Micah); and his son, Dr. Jonathan Lee (his wife, Dr. Sarah Kirkpatrick and children, Cameron and Toby). He is also survived by his brother in Las Vegas, Sang Ok Lee (his wife, Jung); his brother in Seoul, Korea, Sang Moon Lee (his wife, Chung); and many nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held at the Palm Mortuary on Cheyenne Avenue in Las Vegas on October 3rd with a Celebration of Life the following afternoon.
A visitation will also be held at the Pederson-Volker Funeral Home in Chippewa Falls from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, October 9th. Graveside services will follow the next morning at Forest Hill Cemetery in Chippewa Falls at 10:30 a.m.
The family extends gratitude to Dr. Christopher Choi and his office staff for the guidance and expert medical care for Dr. Lee for the past 13 years since the stroke in 2002. Also, special appreciation to the staff of Hospice del Sol for their supportive care for the past 8 months.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas.
