Edward J. LaNou, 99, of Jim Falls, died peacefully Sunday, September 16, 2012 at his home with his family at his side.

He was born May 1, 1913 in St. Paul, MN to Gunda (Hagen) and Joseph LaNou. While Ed was an infant, the family moved to the town of Anson, where Ed was raised and attended school.

At age 16, Ed began working for local farmers, helping to support his family while his father was ill.

At age 22, a young June Morey caught Ed's eye at the filling station in Jim Falls. Although they only lived a few miles apart, they had never met. Soon after their first encounter of Ed filling June's tires, they began seeing each other at local events and so a great love was blooming.

Ed married June on October 8, 1938 at June's family home in the town of Anson. The couple resided in Jim Falls, where they raised their family and developed lifelong friendships with many.

Being a hard worker his entire life, Ed bought a milk route and hauled milk for 13 years. Once his milk route was sold, he went to work on the Holcombe Dam while it was being built, which readied him for a job building homes and doing repair work for Ray Chapek. In 1968, he went to work in food service for the Northern Center for the Developmentally Disabled until his retirement in 1978, at age 65. He was proud to become the caretaker for Copp Cemetery in the town of Anson, which was started by his grandparents. Ed kept the grounds and was responsible for having the roads paved within the cemetery, providing easier access for visitors.

Once retired, Ed and June enjoyed traveling and playing golf together. With his background in woodworking, Ed made many beautiful pieces of furniture for his family. Ed also enjoyed fishing, bird, squirrel and deer hunting. He had many wonderful years of deer hunting with his brother-in-law, Clifford Konechney and later with his sons and grandsons. He proudly shot his 10-point buck at age 92!

He had been a dedicated member of Jim Falls United Methodist Church since 1945.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 74 years, June of Jim Falls; a daughter, Carole (Jerome) Frederick of Chippewa Falls; three sons, Gary (Mary) LaNou of Chippewa Falls, Ken (Donna) LaNou, Don (Roberta) LaNou, all of Jim Falls; a sister, Mabel Daniels of Eau Claire; three brothers, Alvin LaNou of Cadott, Robert LaNou of Tomahawk, Norman (Joyce) LaNou of Eau Claire; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two children in infancy; a sister, Grace Herath; and a brother, Louis LaNou.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, September 19 at Jim Falls United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Scott officiating. Interment will be in Copp Cemetery, town of Anson.

Friends may call from 4-7 p.m., Tuesday, September 18 at Pederson-Volker Funeral Chapel and one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.

Memorials in Ed's honor are appreciated and may be designated to the Jim Falls United Methodist Church.
