Eugene W. Gene Hofkes, 89, of Chippewa Falls, town of Lafayette, died Saturday, March 15, 2014 at Wisconsin Veterans Home, Chippewa Falls.
He was born March 22, 1924 in Chippewa Falls to Eleanor (Kleiner) and Edmund Hofkes. He attended St. Josephs School in Boyd and graduated from Boyd High School in 1941. He attended Eau Claire Business College for one year and then was employed at the Ordinance Plant in Eau Claire. He entered the US Army Air Force in 1943 serving in Saipan and Iwo Jima and was honorably discharged in January 1946 as a Staff Sergeant. He graduated from the Minnesota School of Business in 1948.
Gene married Lois M. Peloquin on September 3, 1949 at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Chippewa Falls.
He was employed as an accountant for Weigand Ford Sales, Mason Shoe, Wood Motor Company and Golden Rule Oil Company, Eau Claire. He retired in 1986 as Comtroller of the Division of Donovan Company, St. Paul.
Gene and Lois have resided on Lake Wissota for over 65 years.
He was a life-time member of the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Lois; three daughters, Mary (Brad) Ewalt of Arizona, Theresa Wiegert of Mahtomedi, MN, Joanne (Wayne) Cowan of Chippewa Falls; three sons, Michael (Sandy) Hofkes of Onalaska, John (Mary) Hofkes, Stephen (Sally) Hofkes all of Chippewa Falls; a daughter-in-law, Susan Hofkes of Blaine, MN; two sisters, Murcille Hencley of St. Paul, Ruth Zachau of Eau Claire; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Thomas Hofkes; one sister, Marion Thornton; five brothers, Francis, Charles, Bernard, Edmund, Jerome and one grandson, Chad Michael Wiegert.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 21 at Notre Dame Catholic Church, Chippewa Falls with Rev. Msgr. Mark Pierce officiating. Interment with military honors will be held at a later date at the Northern Wisconsin Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Spooner.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Thursday at Pederson-Volker Funeral Chapel, Chippewa Falls and one half hour prior to the service Friday at the church.
The family would like to thank the staff and residents at the Veterans Home for their genuine heartfelt compassion, loving kindness, prayers and friendship to Gene and his family.
AFTERSERVICE
A funeral service for Eugene W. Hofkes, 89, of Chippewa Falls was held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 21 at Notre Dame Catholic Church, Chippewa Falls. Msgr. Rev. Mark Pierce officiated at the funeral mass assisted by Dan Dachel. Music was provided by Judy Brist, readings were given by Michael and Stephen Hofkes and gift bearers were John & Mary Hofkes. Interment will be at a later date at Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spooner.
