George K. Barnett, 85, of Jim Falls, died Monday, October 3, 2016 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born April 24, 1931 in Ava, Illinois to Bertha (Veirnum) and Jesse Barnett. The family moved to Wisconsin when George was very young. He graduated from Gilman High School in 1949.

George served honorably in the U.S. Army from August 1952 - May 1954, during the Korean Conflict.

On June 9, 1962, he married his true love, Gladys Helland in Cornell. They resided in Jim Falls, where George worked in maintenance at the Jim Falls Dairy for 41 years until his retirement in April 1996.

George found his peace in the outdoors and found pleasure in the simple things in life. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, putting puzzles together, soduko, gardening, cutting wood or just sitting on the tree swing outside his house, admiring the nature around him. He loved to go camping and the tranquility of a crackling campfire. He cherished time with his family, especially his grandchildren, who fondly referred to him as "Grandpa Camper." He held a special bond with each of them, and always supported their activities and cheered them on in sporting events. He will be dearly missed.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Gladys of Jim Falls; daughters, Susan (Jeff) Mauermann of New Berlin, Karen (Jerry) Clark of Tilden; grandchildren, Cara (Erik Ruud) Mauermann, Lance (Ashley) Clark (and their baby, due this month), Lindy (Michael Derks) Clark; siblings, Sylvia Olejnichak and Dolores Thompson,; and numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Judith Miller, Annabelle Kenner, Ellen Miller; brothers, Delmar, Jesse, and Mahlon Barnett.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday October 6 at Jim Falls United Methodist Church, Jim Falls with the Rev. Jason Kim officiating. Interment with military honors by the Cornell American Legion will immediately follow the service at Cornell Cemetery, Cornell.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m., Wednesday at Borton-Leiser Funeral Home in Cornell , and one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.
