He was born September 29, 1927 to Delia Amelia Steinmetz and George Julius Gehweiler. George graduated from Chippewa Falls Senior High School in 1945. He lived in Jim Falls prior to moving to Chippewa Falls when he married Patricia L. Maurer on Dec. 16, 1972 at Stillwater United Methodist Church in Stillwater, Minn.

George helped his family with the ice route in his early years. He played basketball and football for Chi-Hi. After graduation, he was a paratrooper in the Army from 1946 - 1947 stationed in Sendai, Japan. In 1952, he served with the National Guard. George worked for the Citi Service Station for the following owners: His uncle Harvey Steinmetz; Don McDonald and Lamont Brothers. He worked as a parts man at Lowater Auto Center; then as a custodian at the Middle School from February 1977 until he retired in June of 1991.

George was a member of Zion United Methodist Church, a member of the Masonic Lodge Chippewa Chapter #46. He was a faithful patron at the Chippewa Family Restaurant and knew and acknowledged all the workers there.

Survivors include: a stepdaughter, Sherrie L.(Doyle) Richards; three beloved grandsons, Brandon Richards of La Crosse, Nathan (Tara Hallquist) Richards of Eau Claire and Justin Richards of Chippewa Falls; one treasured great-grandson Cayden Richards of Eau Claire; one brother, William Gehweiler of New Jersey; and nieces and nephews in New Jersey.

He was preceded in death by: his parents, George and Delia Gehweiler; his wife of 35 years, Patricia on July 13, 2008; and one sister-in-law, Lynn Gehweiler.

George had a great love for his Lord, his church and his family. He will be sadly missed by all.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, May 9, 2011 at Zion United Methodist Church in Chippewa Falls with Rev. Ann Scott officiating. Interment with military honors conducted by the Chippewa Falls Patriotic Council will be in Prairie View Cemetery, village of Lake Hallie.

Friends may call two hours prior to the service Monday at the church.

Afterservice

A funeral service for George J. Gehweiler, 83, of Chippewa Falls, town of Tilden, was held at 1 p.m., Monday, May 09, 2011, at Zion United Methodist Church in Chippewa Falls. Rev. Ann Scott officiated and.music was provided by organist, Jackie Gibbs and vocalist, Doug Parker.

Interment was in Prairie View Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Chippewa Falls Patriotic Council and Thomas Eder Jr. bugled "Taps." Casket bearers were: friends, Red Nayes, Roger Kressin, Art Matthews and grandsons, Brandon, Nathan and Justin Richards.
