George Joseph Hegenbart, 96, of Chippewa Falls, formerly of Green Bay, died Sunday, December 4, 2016 at the Chippewa Manor Nursing Home in Chippewa Falls.

He was born June 13, 1920 in LaCrosse to Anna (Sinniger) and Joseph Hegenbart. He was a graduateof Aquinas High School.

Following high school, George delivered for Coca-Cola. He served in the U.S. Army in the Philippines and Japan during WWII as a surgeon's assistant in a field hospital.

On October 20, 1956, George married Mary E. Costello in LaCrosse. They resided in LaCrosse where George workedin transportation at Standard Oil/BP. In 1957, he was transferred to the Green Bay office, where he and Mary raised their daughter Mary Ann.His wife preceded him in death in 2005; and his daughter in 2009. Following his daughter's death in 2009, George moved to Chippewa Falls to be closer to family and lived with his niece Carol and Mike Dahl before moving to the Chippewa Manor Retirement Center in May 2010.

George was a huge Wisconsin sports fan. He was a season ticket holder for the Packers, and loved cheering on the Badgers and the Brewers as well. George was a very special, kind man with a big heart and sense of humor. He was always so thankful and appreciative to those who cared forhim.

George is survived bysister-in-law and brother-in-law, Rita and Bob Schelble of DeForest, WI; many nieces and nephews, other relatives that he was also very closewith; plus many dearly devoted friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary; his daughter, Mary Ann Hegenbart; a sister Elizabeth Wysocky; a sister-in-law, Margaret Ritter; and brothers-in-law, Lawrence Wysocky and Eugene Ritter.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, December 18 at the Chapel of the Resurrection at the Chippewa Manor with Fr. Robert Hoekstra officiating. Burial with military honors will take place at 1 p.m. Monday, December 19 at the LaCrosse Catholic Cemetery in LaCrosse, Wis.

A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service Sunday at the Chippewa Manor Chapel.
