He was born May 29, 1923 in the town of Eagle Point to Anna (Rheingans) and Reinhardt Heidtke. He attended school in Chippewa Falls. He joined the U.S. Navy on January 21, 1941, where he served on the U.S.S. Hornet Aircraft Carrier in the Pacific, until being honorably discharged on October 1, 1945.

Gilbert married Betty Anderson on June 23, 1951 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Eau Claire.

He was employed by Gillette Tire which later became Uniroyal as an electrician for 37 years, until his retirement on July 26, 1982.

Survivors include: a daughter, Trudy (Genio) Sturino of South Suburban Chicago; two sons, Jerold (Chris) Heidtke of Milwaukee, Steven (Jennifer) Heidtke of Stillwater; a brother, Robert (Lorraine) Heidtke of Grand Rapids, Mich.; seven grandchildren, Emma R. Heidtke, Joseph, Thomas, Peter and Daniel Sturino, Sophia and Jeffrey Heidtke, and other relatives and friends.
