Harland L. Mattison, 83, of Chippewa Falls, village of Lake Hallie, died Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at his home.
He was born July 16, 1931 in Menomonie to Echo (Powell) and Harry Mattison. He graduated from Eau Claire Sr. High School in 1949.
On April 18, 1951, he married Audrey Krause at Hope Lutheran Church in Eau Claire. Harland and his parents were charter members of Hope Lutheran. Harland was a member of their first confirmation class.
He went to work for the Eau Claire Burial Co., then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he served honorably from April 1951 - 1952.
Following his military service, he went back to work at the burial vault company. He also continued his education at vocational school, earning a certificate in welding. He then moved to Minneapolis where he worked for Minneapolis Molines. He returned to Chippewa Falls and began his own burial vault company, Northwestern Burial Vault, where he made his own vault forms. He sold the company in 1968 and worked at the U.S Post Office, retiring as a supervisor in 1991.
Harland enjoyed going to the casino and playing cards with Audrey. He also enjoyed woodworking and made games, furniture, and other things for his family that they will dearly cherish. He loved being outdoors and camping. He actually made a camper out of an old school bus to take his family on camping trips. He loved being with his family and they will remember him for his big heart. He will be dearly missed.
Survivors include his wife, Audrey of Chippewa Falls; children, Dean (Sandy) of Lake Holcombe, Mike (Lynn) of Menomonie, Vicki of Cadott, Dan (Jill) of Chippewa Falls, Scott (Michael) of Dubuque, IA, Jon (Peggy) of Chippewa Falls; sisters, Sharon Hartl of Chippewa Falls, Linda Bush of Altoona, Diane (Chuck) Peterson of Chippewa Falls; a sister-in-law, Cheryl Mattison of Chippewa Falls; 17 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Darrel "Matt" Mattison; two brothers-in-law, Arlen Hartl and Charles "Chick" Bush; a grandson, Bryan Mattison; and a great-grandson, Garrett Tio.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 24 at Hope Lutheran Church 2226 Eddy Ln., Eau Claire with Pastor Jamie Brieske officiating. Private interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery, Chippewa Falls.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Saturday at the church.
AFTERSERVICE
A memorial service for Harland L. Mattison was held at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 24 at Hope Lutheran Church in Eau Claire. Pastor Jamie Brieske officiated, cross bearer was Janna Mattison, bowl ringer was Anna Jaenke and reader was son, Mike Mattison. Communion servers were Katie, Lauren and Emily Mattison. Music was provided by accompanist, Gary Polden, vocalist was son, Scott Mattison with a special selection sung by Harland's children and grandchildren. During the service, several family members shared memories of Harland.
Interment was at Forest Hill Cemetery, Chippewa Falls. Military honors were conducted by the Chippewa Falls Patriotic Council with Taps bugled by Nicole Johnson.
