Helen A. Johnson, 90, of Chippewa Falls, died Sunday, September 25, 2016 at the Chippewa Manor.
She was born October 31, 1925 in New Auburn to Gladys (Cole) and George Phillips. She grew up in New Auburn and graduated from New Auburn High School. Helen furthered her education at Eau Claire's Teacher's College, where she earned a degree in teaching. She taught in rural school in Barron County until her marriage.
Helen married Elmer Johnson on September 28, 1946. They resided in Cameron for a short time, before moving to a farm in New Auburn. They later moved to Chippewa Falls where they both worked at the Northern Center from 1964 until 1986, when they retired.
After retirement, they built a home in Minocqua, which they enjoyed for many years until Elmer's death in 1992.
Helen was a member of Zion United Methodist Church in Chippewa Falls and Mary's Circle. She was a longtime volunteer for the TriniTeam and the Chippewa County Dept. of Aging.
Survivors include a daughter, Joy Lynn (Richard) Wendt of Chetek; three sons, Ronny (Ann) Johnson of Chippewa Falls, Bruce (Lori) Johnson of Lake Holcombe, and Joel Johnson of Cornell; grandchildren, Paul Wendt, Jonathon Wendt, Jim (Colleen) Johnson, Benjamin Johnson, Andrew Johnson, Elizabeth Hawkins, Sarah (Bob) Wruck, Amy Hall and Cara (Douglas Schoonover) Johnson-Schoonover; great-grandchildren, Ashley, Dakota, Madison, Tyler, Noah, Savanna, Colt, Jereko, Brianna, Tyler, Lana, Jordan, Jasmine, Isabelle, Trenton, Morgan, Jayde, Melissa, and Joseph; great-great-grandchildren, Michael, Easton, Kaiden, and Nolan; brother-in-law, Fred Marick of Eau Claire; sister-in-law, Shirley Phillips of Amery; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer; sisters, Norma Jean (Russell) Thompson, Marjorie Marick, and Ruth Phillips in infancy; brothers, Lyle Phillips, and Clinton Phillips in infancy; grandchild, Dylan Crabb; and great-grandchild, Melissa Wendt.
Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m., Friday, September 30, 2016 at Pederson-Volker Funeral Chapel, Chippewa Falls.
Interment will take place at 10 a.m., Saturday, October 1, 2016 at Prairie View Cemetery, village of Lake Hallie (prior to the service). A celebration of Helen's life will follow at 11 a.m., Saturday, at Zion Methodist Church, 1102 Superior St., Chippewa Falls with Rev. Listowel Ayensu-Mensah officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Helen's memory may be directed to Zion UMC Building Improvement Fund.
