SERVICE:

Herbert E. Schilling, 75, of 19448 County Hwy. X, Chippewa Falls, town of Lafayette, died Saturday, March 2, 2013 at his home surrounded by his loving family while under the care of Mayo Clinic Health System Hospice.
Herb was born February 20, 1938 in the town of Washington, Eau Claire County, to Katie (Hempelman) and Albert Schilling. He graduated from Eau Claire Sr. High School in 1956.
Following high school, he entered the U.S. Army and served from 1956 until being honorably discharged as Staff Sergeant in 1964.
Sharon Shervey was the real estate broker helping Herb with the purchase of his first home. They fell in love and the two united in marriage on August 3, 1968 in Chippewa Falls. The couple raised their children in the same home and had resided there since.
Sharon's parents had passed away at an early age, leaving behind Sharon's three younger siblings. Herb and Sharon raised the children as their own, along with their own three children. Although they were Herb's brothers and sister-in-law, he was considered their "adoptive" father.
Herb had a fantastic garden consisting of every kind of vegetable; but he was most famous for his pumpkins. For many years, he had a vegetable stand in his front yard and loved taking care of his customers, who he got to know quite well over the years. He also enjoyed ice fishing; cars; listening to country music, especially Kitty Wells; and cooking. If he wasn't in the garden, he was in the kitchen, preparing meals for his friends and family. Of course his specialty was pumpkin pies!
He will be dearly missed by his wife, Sharon of Chippewa Falls; two daughters, Tamara (Kevin) Johnson of Downing, Laurie (Brian) Myhre of Menomonie; a son, Daniel (Kara) Schilling of Eau Claire; brothers/sister-in-law and "adopted" children, Andrea Kuechenmeister of Eau Claire, Douglas (Verna) Shervey of Kinston, NC, Randy (Rebecca) Shervey of Chippewa Falls; two sisters, Carol Ann Harris of American Canyon, CA, Judy Marie (Sonny) Hanson of Eau Claire; a brother, Roger J. (Carole) Schilling of Eau Claire; grandchildren, Kyle and Travis Johnson, Codey Hatfield, Austin and Derek Schilling, Jonathan and Kayla Rowan; and "bonus" grandchildren, Mason Flesberg, Erika and Kayla Myhre; his two canine companions, Parker John and Spike; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and nine siblings, Vivian, Roselyn, Betty, Marvin, Arnold, Alfred, Robert, Wilbert and one sister in infancy.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 6 at the English Lutheran Church of Bateman with the Rev. Paul Tobiason officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the Chippewa Falls Patriotic Council will take place following the service at Bateman Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 - 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 5 at Pederson-Volker Funeral Chapel, Chippewa Falls and one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.
