Hughes A. McCausland, 94, of Chippewa Falls, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Friday, November 1, 2013 at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in Chippewa Falls.
He was born January 30, 1919 in Mauston to Hazel (Petrie) and Thomas R. McCausland. He grew up in Chippewa Falls. Hughes served honorably in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 - 1951, during WWII and the Korean Conflict.
On June 8, 1946, Hughes married Betty Ann Nelson at Trinity United Methodist Church in Chippewa Falls. They resided in Chippewa Falls where they raised their children and made their home. Hughes worked for Northern States Power for 41 years until his retirement.
He was a lifelong member of Trinity United Methodist Church; member and two-time past Worshipful Master (1948 and 1998) for the Chippewa Falls Lodge #176 F&AM; member of the York Rite Chippewa Chapter #46 R.A.M, where he achieved the Knight of the York Cross of Honour, the highest distinction earned for serving the York Rite of Freemasonry; member of the Chippewa Council #25 R&SM; the Tancred Commandery #27 K.T.; sung in the chorus for the Scottish Rite in Eau Claire; past president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce; and developed the Chippewa Campers Club and their campground. Hughes was instrumental in the building and the design of the Masonic Temple in Chippewa Falls. His other interests include golfing, gardening, bowling, tennis and traveling. He and Betty traveled to all 50 states. Hughes also played the coronet for many years, including during his time spent in the military. Once discharged, he continued playing in the community band at Irvine Park and with a band in Chippewa Falls that played downtown every Friday night. He was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. He will be dearly missed.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Betty of Chippewa Falls; four daughters, Sandra (Merle) Harberts of Chippewa Falls, Shari (Jim) Raleigh of Chippewa Falls, Ava McCausland of St. Paul, MN, Sue Nicholson of St. Paul, MN; ten grandchildren, Rick (Lisa) Zimbelman, Melissa (Tim) Turbett, Desiree (Mike) Trebesch, Josh White, Francesca Yvonne, Eli (Jill) McCausland, Sarah Clinton-McCausland, Daniel Clinton-McCausland, Adam (Melissa) Nicholson, Jamie (Travis) Terich; step-grandchildren, Joe (Corlynn) Raleigh, Greg (Michele) Raleigh, Anthony (Karen) Raleigh, Matthew (Kim) Raleigh, Michelle Porter, Tony Wallick; 14 great-grandchildren; and 13 step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his sons-in-law, Fred White and John Nicholson.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, November 5 at Trinity United Methodist Church, Chippewa Falls with Rev. Teri Koca officiating. The masonic funeral rite will be given immediately following the service at the church. Interment with military honors presented by the Chippewa Falls Patriotic Council will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery, Chippewa Falls.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church.
The McCausland family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Wissota Health and the Wisconsin Veterans Home for their excellent care and for treating Hughes with patience, dignity and respect.
AFTERSERVICE
A funeral service for Hughes A. McCausland, 94, of Chippewa Falls was held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, November 5 at Trinity United Methodist Church, Chippewa Falls. The Rev. Terri Koca officiated and music was provided by Judy Brist. Several friends and famiy members shared personal reflections during the service. A Masonic Funeral Rite was conducted by the Chippewa Falls Lodge #176 F&AM. Interment with military honors conducted by the Chippewa Falls Patriotic Council was at Forest Hill Cemetery Chippewa Falls and Frankie Rineck bugled taps.
