Jan Ferguson, age 83, of Chippewa Falls, died Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire.
He was born May 27, 1934 to Emil and Mary (Popple) Ferguson. He graduated from Chippewa Falls High School, class of 1952. He furthered his education at UW-EC, graduating in 1960 with a Bachelor's Degree. In 1963, he returned to the UW-EC, and earned a degree in education, and later earned his Master's Degree in Education, also from UW-EC.
In 1963, Jan married Mary Lou Douglas. They divorced in 1993.
Jan began teaching in Williams, Minnesota for three years, where he taught five separate classes and coached baseball and basketball. Next, he taught in Hayward, WI for a year, then moved to Barron, where he taught for 29 years. He continued coaching as well; he coached baseball and wrestling for 12 years, with both teams winning Heart of the North Championship. Jan, along with a colleague, started the girls softball team at the school which he also coached for six years.
Jan was an active member of his community. He worked with the Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and coached 4-H softball for many years; he was on the Zoning Board in Barron and as of 2014, was on the Zoning Board of Appeals in Chippewa Falls for 18 years. In 1974, he was received the Award of Merit for the BSA Blue Hills District out of Rice Lake. He was a member of the Chippewa Falls Masonic Lodge #176 F&AM.
He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and coaching.
He is survived by his two sons, Mark and Brent (Sarah) Ferguson; two granddaughters, Emily and Samantha Ferguson; and dear friend of 20 years, Yvonne Bernier.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A Masonic funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, August 18 at Pederson-Volker Funeral Chapel, Chippewa Falls led by Les Paulson, member of the Chippewa Falls Lodge #176 F&AM.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service Friday at the funeral chapel.
