Michael W. Smith, 60, of Chippewa Falls, town of Lafayette, died Tuesday, June 5, 2012 unexpectedly at his home.
He was born December 12, 1951 in Eau Claire to Betty (Weaver) and Roger Smith. He graduated from New Richmond High School in 1970.
Mike served in the U.S. Army from 1971 until his honorable discharge in 1974. He continued his military service in the National Guard until 1991.
Mike continued his education at UW-EC, earning a B.S. in Nursing. He worked as an Registered Nurse at the Chippewa Manor for many years. Mike also loved to cook and went back to school to earn a degree in Culinary Arts.
Mike enjoyed working with and helping others. In recovery himself, Mike reached out to others battling addiction and volunteered his time at Serenity House, working with the clients there and sharing his story.
He will be dearly missed by his daughter, Sarah (Scott) Vissers of Green Bay; son, Kennedy Smith of Chippewa Falls; sisters, Rachel (Clifford) Gorka of New Richmond, Marie (Bill) Schachtner of Houlten; a brother, Larry (Myrna Flatland) Smith of Minneapolis, MN; a precious grandson, Anthony Vissers; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a granddaughter, Frances Ellen Joyce Vissers.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, June 9 at Pederson-Volker Funeral Chapel, (44 E. Columbia St.), Chippewa Falls with Rev. Robert Hoekstra officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spooner.
Friends may call one hour prior to the service Saturday at the funeral chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the family are appreciated.
