Norman Henry Sandvick, 95, of Chippewa Falls, died Monday, September 23, 2013 at Wissota Health in Chippewa Falls.
He was born on July 3, 1918 in Chippewa Falls to Simon and Marie (Kleven) Sandvick. He attended local schools, graduating from Chippewa Falls High School in 1936.
He served for two years in Civilian Conservation Corps. in northern Wisconsin and married Lucille B. Heyde on February 17, 1940.
Norm was employed by Mason Furniture from 1939 1962, then at Northwestern Bank until he retired in 1982 as vice president.
He served in the U.S. Navy from September 1943 until December 1945. His naval service included Boot Camp and Navy Hospital Corpsman training at the Great Lakes Naval Base, Illinois, service at the Naval Air Training Center near Memphis, Tennessee, and assignment to the U.S. Naval Hospital, Tacloban, Philippine Islands where he was at the wars end. He was entitled to wear the Asia-Pacific Theater of War, American Theater, and American Victory medals. He was honorably discharged.
A harrowing sea voyage from the Philippines to Pearl Harbor, a smooth sailing from Pearl Harbor to San Francisco, and a train trip from California brought him back to Chippewa Falls.
Norman was confirmed at Central Lutheran Church and remained an active leader in that congregation for many years. He was later a charter member and supporter of Christ Lutheran Church. Active in several civic groups, he was especially proud of his ten years as an adult leader in the Boy Scouts of America on both local and district levels. Norm was also a 69 year member of the American Legion.
Norm was an avid outdoorsman and a hunter and fisherman of notable accomplishment.
Norm was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Heyde Sandvick; brothers, Arthur and Gilbert Sandvick; and sisters, Gudrun Johnson, Christine Bleskacek and Ruth Pederson Schilling.
He is survived by his son, Gerald Norman (Lynda) of Duluth, MN; sister, Irene Brown of Eau Claire; and many nieces and nephews.
We are much saddened by his death, but at the same time grateful that the end of his life came quickly, with dignity and without painful suffering. A father, respected counselor, and trusted friend, he will be deeply missed and long remembered.
