Longtime teacher and coach, Robert J. Bob Morgan, age 81, passed away Saturday, Sept 14, 2013 at his home on Axehandle Lake in New Auburn. Bob was blessed to spend his final days surrounded by family and close friends who comforted him by singing songs, reading scripture, and sharing memories.

Bob was born on February 3, 1932 in Charlotte, NC and his family relocated to Chippewa Falls. He attended McDonell High School, and upon graduation he enlisted in the US Marine Corps and served in the Korean War as a forward observer, military police and Sergeant. Bob then attended Eau Claire State College (now UW Eau Claire) where he met the love of his life, Nancy. They married on June 8, 1957.

He earned his Masters Degree in Education at Colorado State College and then taught and coached for over 30 years. Retiring to their lake home, Bob and Nancy treasured many years with family and special friends, enjoying the serenity of the lake and many Axehandle traditions of campfire sing-a-longs, fish fries, and pontoon rides. He loved music and playing the bass alongside lifelong friend, Trygve Danielson. As a father and grandfather, husband, friend, teacher and coach, Bob instilled the importance of family and friends, working hard, and having fun. He will be remembered for his ability to inspire his family, students, and players to strive to be their best.

A legendary basketball player and coach, Bob was known in the state of Wisconsin for his leadership and achievements. His discipline and competitive drive contributed to his success at McDonell and Eau Claire. Bob began his coaching career in Greenfield and Winneconne before moving to Janesville. Coach Morgan was Parker Highs first basketball coach whose 11 years with the Vikings were highlighted by winning the 1971 WIAA State Championship. Coach Morgan served as president of the Wisconsin High Schools Coaches Association and was founder of the basketball coaching clinics and youth sports camps. His successes led to his induction into three Hall of Fames. His love of basketball was passed on to his children and grandchildren where Bob enjoyed watching them play on the painted court in their driveway, and in high school and college.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years Nancy (Liehe) Morgan on August 16, 2012, his sister Jane Schwartz, and mother Margaret (Wescott) Morgan Larson.

He is survived by sons: Steve (Terry) Morgan and Mike (Kathy) Morgan; daughters Kelly (Larry) Prescott and Robin (Bob) Zydowsky. Bob was affectionately known as Papa to 13 grandchildren: Casey, Andrea, Sarah, Matthew, Tom, Anne, Robby, John, Kevin, Mary, Esther, James, and David.

The Lord is near the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18 ESV)
