Ruth Elvern Peterson, 89, of Chippewa Falls, died peacefully Monday, March 9, 2015 at her home.
She was born June 16, 1925 in Rice Lake to Agnes Melinda (Tronstad) and Oscar Wilhelm Johnson. Ruth was baptized and confirmed at Long Lake Lutheran Church in Sarona, Wisconsin. She graduated from Rice Lake High School.
Ruth worked in various capacities after high school and eventually moved to Minneapolis where she served as the secretary to the Chief Financial Officer of Lutheran Brotherhood (now Thrivent Financial).
On May 17, 1958, Ruth married Eldred Raymond Peterson at Long Lake Lutheran Church in Sarona, Wisconsin. They had met while serving as camp counselors at Luther Park Bible Camp in Chetek.
Ruth dedicated her life to lovingly raising their two children together and serving alongside Eldred in his ministry as a Lutheran pastor until his retirement in 1985. She directed choirs and taught Sunday school classes, provided music, designed and made banners and puppets, participated in and led women's Bible studies and groups, and cared for the members of each congregation they served. Ruth was an active member of the ALCW, serving as a speaker at events and for a time as the Director of Education for the Southwestern District of Wisconsin.
Survivors include a son, Dale Lee Peterson of Houston, Texas; a daughter, Esther Christine (Robert) Johnson of Chippewa Falls; a sister, Dorothy Neste of Spooner; three granddaughters, Anna Christine (David) Mitchell of Nashville, Tennessee, Julia Lorraine Johnson of Columbus, Ohio, Clara Louise Johnson of Chippewa Falls; and a great-granddaughter, Eloise Grace Mitchell.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eldred; a sister, Helen M. Larson of Rice Lake; a brother-in-law, Paul M. Larson of Rice Lake; and a brother-in-law, Louis A. Neste of Spooner.
A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, March 15 at the Chapel of the Resurrection at the Chippewa Manor with Rev. Robert Hoekstra officiating. Interment will be Monday, March 16 at 10:00 a.m. at Forest Hill Cemetery, Chippewa Falls.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service Sunday at the Chippewa Manor Chapel of the Resurrection, 222 Chapman Rd., Chippewa Falls.
Ruth was an active and energetic witness for Christ and she became a spiritual mentor and friend to many. When homebound, she continued to pray diligently for the needs of others. She will be remembered and cherished as an unselfish and deeply loving wife, mother, grandma, and friend. "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." I Thessalonians 5:16-18
