Bill served in the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1965.

He married Peggy Witt in 1968 and they resided in the Ladysmith/Bruce area, where they raised their three children. Bill worked as a welder for the SooLine Railroad for many years. Once the railroad was sold, Bill continued as a professional welder for various businesses. He moved to the Chippewa Falls area in 2001 to be near his family.

Survivors include two daughters, Deedee (John) Effertz of Eau Claire, Denise (Paul) Allsage of Lake Crystal, Minn.; a son, Dexter (Michelle McCleary) Hurless of Eau Claire; a sister, Connie (John) Crowe of Ohio; half-sister, Melanie Westgerdes; half-brothers, Rick and Steve Knoth; ten grandchildren, Jennifer, Jade, Jacob, Jaxon and Jett Allsage, Dexter Jr., Mason and Mackenzie Hurless, Kyle and Alicia Effertz; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his mother; and a brother, Stanley D. Hurless.

Bill was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting and fishing. His hobbies included collecting knives and guns; watching old western movies and he enjoyed spending time on his Ham Radio. He was a "people person" and was able to hold a conversation with just about anyone. He looked forward to family gatherings because he treasured time with his children and grandchildren, whom he was very proud of.
